MHI Compensation: This position is eligible for the MHI $1000 Scholarship. Students who receive an offer for this position will be required to enroll in the Mellon Humanities Internship course to receive the $1000 scholarship disbursement. As referenced in the Student Interest Form that you filled out to sign up for participation in MHI, this scholarship can impact, or be impacted by, other financial aid you receive. 

If an internship requires out of pocket costs, students may apply for reimbursement for expenses including background checks, qualifying travel, or equipment. All applications will be reviewed and processed for eligibility. Please contact your departments internship coordinator for more details.

The $1000 scholarship offered for this position is intended to provide financial assistance for the pursuit of your education; it is not compensation for the performance of any services and does not create an employment relationship between the you and the Site.

This position is an experiential learning opportunity and receipt of the scholarship is tied to an academic course (IDS 3947). If you do not complete your registration for the course in a timely manner, your internship offer may be withdrawn, and your department’s Internship Coordinator may notify the host organization that the position has reopened.

Job Description:                                                                                                      

St Pete Campus ONLY

This position requires some in person studio time in downtown St Pete.

Radio St. Pete / Sunshine 96.7 FM is seeking an enthusiastic intern to help produce and promote Bulls by the Bay, our local program focused on the University of South Florida St. Petersburg Bulls, campus life, athletics, students, alumni, faculty, and the people and stories that connect USF St. Petersburg to our community.

This is a great opportunity for a student interested in sports broadcasting, journalism, communications, social media, podcasting, marketing, or digital media to gain hands-on experience producing short weekly content for a real community radio station.

What You’ll Do

Bulls by the Bay Content

• Assist with developing content and story ideas for Bulls by the Bay.
• Research topics, people, events, and issues connected to USF St. Petersburg.
• Help identify potential interview guests, including students, athletes, coaches, faculty, alumni, campus leaders, and community partners.
• Record interviews and other audio for use on Radio St. Pete.
• Help prepare interviews and stories for broadcast and podcast distribution.
• Write short summaries, introductions, and supporting blog content for each segment.
• Research and provide links to relevant websites and resources to accompany stories.

Responsibilities may include:

• Creating posts and promotional graphics.
• Writing captions and headlines.
• Creating short-form video clips from interviews and broadcasts.
• Promoting upcoming shows and podcast episodes.
• Highlighting guests, stories, USF events, and Bulls-related community activities.
• Helping grow awareness and engagement for Bulls by the Bay.

Event & Community Coverage

When opportunities arise, the intern may:

• Attend USF St. Petersburg events and activities.
• Capture short audio interviews, photos, and video.
• Talk with students, faculty, athletes, alumni, and community members.
• Help identify stories that would be of interest to Bulls fans and the broader St. Petersburg community.

Minimum Skills & Qualifications

• Interest in sports, journalism, broadcasting, communications, or social media.
• Good communication and people skills.
• Strong interest in learning how to conduct interviews.
• Good writing and basic research skills.
• Comfortable approaching and talking with new people.
• Able to use a smartphone to record audio, photos, and video.
• Familiarity with social media platforms.
• Reliable and able to meet deadlines.
• Willingness to learn and take direction.
