MHI Compensation: This position is eligible for the MHI $1000 Scholarship. Students who receive an offer for this position will be required to enroll in the Mellon Humanities Internship course to receive the $1000 scholarship disbursement. As referenced in the Student Interest Form that you filled out to sign up for participation in MHI, this scholarship can impact, or be impacted by, other financial aid you receive. 

If an internship requires out of pocket costs, students may apply for reimbursement for expenses including background checks, qualifying travel, or equipment. All applications will be reviewed and processed for eligibility. Please contact your departments internship coordinator for more details.

The $1000 scholarship offered for this position is intended to provide financial assistance for the pursuit of your education; it is not compensation for the performance of any services and does not create an employment relationship between the you and the Site.

This position is an experiential learning opportunity and receipt of the scholarship is tied to an academic course (IDS 3947). If you do not complete your registration for the course in a timely manner, your internship offer may be withdrawn, and your department’s Internship Coordinator may notify the host organization that the position has reopened.

Job Description:                                                                                                      

The Membership Growth & Community Engagement Intern will gain hands-on experience in nonprofit management, marketing, communications, community engagement, and youth development while supporting Scouting America’s efforts to reach more youth and families.
Working with Council staff and volunteers, the intern will assist with school partnerships, presentations, community outreach, recruitment events, and membership initiatives. The intern will also complete a project-based Membership Growth Initiative, applying academic knowledge to a real-world opportunity and developing recommendations that support the Council’s mission.
 

Key Responsibilities
• Build and maintain relationships with schools and community partners to support youth recruitment.
• Conduct classroom talks, school presentations, and other outreach promoting Scouting programs.
• Assist with youth recruitment, registration events, school open houses, and community activities.
• Support volunteers and unit leaders with recruitment strategies and event preparation.
• Research schools, communities, and potential partners to identify membership growth opportunities.
• Maintain records of outreach activities, contacts, events, and results.
• Complete a focused Membership Growth Initiative that includes research, implementation, evaluation, and recommendations.
• Present project findings and recommendations to Council staff at the conclusion of the internship.
• Participate in regular supervisor meetings, training, and required internship reporting.

Qualifications
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills and an interest in public speaking.
• Organized, self-motivated, professional, and able to work independently with guidance.
• Interest in marketing, communications, education, nonprofit management, community engagement, public relations, sales, or youth development.
• Comfortable engaging with youth, families, educators, volunteers, and community leaders.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
• Must complete required Scouting America onboarding, Adult Application, training, and background check.
• Previous Scouting experience is preferred but not required.
