AutoZone, Inc.

Sales associate

August - September 2020 • Fort Worth, TX

What I liked

I liked the information that i acquired on a daily basis. It helped me understand more about vehicles and how they work internally. I learned about several different parts, how to diagnose them if they appeared faulty, and how to select the appropriate parts for vehicles depending on the situation.

What I wish was different

I don't wish anything was different. The moment I walked in they gave me a quick explanation of how everything worked and threw me in. If I had any difficulties they would help me and explain.

Advice

Working at Autozone is a great way to learn more about automobiles, and how they function.

What I liked

I've just started my internship at AutoZone so I have yet to have a full conclusion of my experience. So far I'm enjoying how hands-on the work is and it's pretty cool to see how the creative team work their magic.

What I wish was different

I'm not familiar with anything automotive or even the branding so I am struggling to try to help with ideas on advertisements or social media copy.

Advice

It's fast-paced and a lot is expected of you when it comes to growth at the end of the internship.

Customer Service Representative

May - August 2019 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

I had the opportunity to help people and teach people new things about their cars. I also loved that I got to help people with a subject I love and find fun. Solving problems and finding parts was a fun part of the job because it was a puzzle with a great outcome. Learning new things from those that are already mechanics was always refreshing.

What I wish was different

Pay and scheduling. I was supposed to be part-time but I would work overtime to cover others schedules

Advice

Don't be scared to ask questions. The managers can be stoic but they are very knowledgable and you can learn a lot from them. Don't let people get to you, they are already upset because they have a car they need to work on. We have to be nicer and take some of that weight off of their shoulders.

Store Operations Intern

June 2018 - August 2019 • Memphis, TN

What I liked

AutoZone provides an excellent environment that allows an intern to feel as valuable as the full time employees. The work assigned to interns is meaningful and important, and interns gets real world experience within the Fortune 500 company. AutoZone has a Human Resource Specialist that does a remarkable job creating and managing events for the intern program, allowing interns to be fully involved with the organization and also the city of Memphis. They provides an amazing opportunity to network with interns and executives alike.

What I wish was different

I think there are 2 opportunities for the intern program at AutoZone. The first is I think that it would be beneficial to have group projects that are compiled of teams only interns. This would allow interns to collaborate on projects and have more cross-functional interactions The second is out of office activities could be implemented to get a stronger bond between interns. AutoZone partners with New Memphis for after hours Memphis experiences, but I think implementing events specifically sponsored by AutoZone will allow for a higher percentage of attendance from AutoZone interns.

Advice

It is very important to understand that internships are dependent on the effort put in. The more effort applied to an internship, the more valuable the internship becomes. Always participate in as many activities and projects possible. Another important piece of advice is questions are often welcomed by management. The fear of appearing incapable and incompetent often leads interns to act on their own intuition. This can sometimes create misalignments between the the expected project and the project produced. Always ensure a proper understanding of expectations before starting a project. Ask questions! Lastly, utilize the time spent as an intern to network. At AutoZone especially, interns are exposed to executives constantly. Introduce yourself and make an impression. These relationships can lead to amazing opportunities in the future.
